Bathroom Repairs

The WOLBI Campus has 26 small, Korean-style, tile bathrooms, each with a tile shower. When built, much effort went into waterproofing these rooms. We installed waterproof liners, waterproof wall boards, and waterproof grout.

PROBLEM: After repeated repairs, the bathrooms have continued to leak water causing damage to the floors below. We have come to realize that tile bathrooms are not the best for us here. Wood houses settle and ‘breathe’ which puts pressure on the tiles in our bathrooms and around the floor drains. Also, over time and heavy use, the grout between the tiles often cracks and looks disgusting. Honestly, this has been one of the most difficult problems we have tried to solve.

SOLUTION: We have repeatedly failed in our attempts at repair. We have received lots of input from both Korean and International builders and plumbers. We have researched how Korean hotels, that get heavy use, are able to keep their bathrooms from leaking. We have concluded that we need to have a Korean company come in and change our small bathrooms from a tile system to a hotel-style laminated waterproof wall panel system. We plan to replace 17 damaged bathrooms in three dorms our staff and students use. Hanssem is a major bathroom furniture company in Korea and the best available to do this job on Jeju Island. They are able to completely install these wall panel bathrooms, complete with new fixtures, and to provide after-service.

COST: Hanssem came a few weeks ago and gave us a price quote of under $4000 per bathroom or a total of $60,000 USD to complete this project. Lord willing, we are trying to complete this project by December 5 and be able to have it ready to use when winter camp on begins January 3.
